Government Shutdown and the Jersey Shore Half Marathon

By | October 2, 2013

Quite a few of my law school friends were sent home on furlough today – I went to law school in Washington DC and know a lot of government lawyers and employees.  I was a little bit jealous of all the furlough fun people seem to be having, but I am definitely NOT jealous of the stress that comes from irregular paychecks! I hope everyone gets back to work soon.

I didn’t expect the shutdown to hit all THAT close to home – I don’t work for the government, I still have to pay my student loans and taxes… The worst part of all of this was just having to listen to all the talking heads freak about this for the foreseeable future.

EXCEPT Mark and I had planned to run the Jersey Shore Half Marathon this weekend, which is held at Sandy Hook National Park.  It’s a pretty great race – I actually ran my first half-marathon there back in 2007 :) Anyway, we got the following email from the race organizers today:

So, it looks like we might not be running in Sandy Hook this weekend after all… Anyone willing to guess whether the government will get its act together or not by Friday? I definitely don’t have any great hope. I guess we’ll end up taking deferred entry to 2014 – I realize they can’t refund fees because they’ve already paid for shirts, permits, fees, etc., but it is definitely frustrating that there aren’t any other options!

Springtime in Paris

By | October 1, 2013

Bored on a Monday night? Have a boatload of frequent flyer miles? Why not sign up for the Paris Marathon?!

Yours truly is headed to the City of Lights in April to run the Paris Marathon! The idea had kind of been in the back of my mind for the past week, since I realized I could get there for cheap on frequent flyer miles.  I can stay with close friends from AFS who live in the city. Sounds like a plan! See you in springtime, Paris!
